The language and the style of registers differ from each other in the different ages.

Roman Catholic registers were kept in Hungarian only as of the end of the 19th Century – before this period merely in the years of 1840-ies. Regardless these two-three decades they were written in Latin. Above these the unaccustomed eyes are not able to read and to define the handwriting of those times.

It is a frequent problem, as well that the denomination to be researched, not in every case had a church at the actual settlement. In these cases it is to find where, at which places the faithful had been registered, and this to ascertain an expert is required.

In some cases one must be acquainted also with the customs of the given period in order to find the traces of the person or family to be found. In the lack of several years of experience it is fairly hopeless.

The research is a long-lasting, time-consuming task, and its scurrying as hobby, or merely in the spare time is not enough effective.

• Why is the register the only source of the researches?

The simple, peasant families were not registered in any other places, in connection with them no documents were established, where data, family contact could be detected from.

In case of noble families the sources are much wider, moreover the research can go back to centuries before, as well.

• Why can we mostly go back in time only to the beginning of the 18th Century?

The Council of Trent in the middle of the 16th Century had ordered the introduction of keeping registers in Europe. Because of the wars against the Turks in Hungary it began at the end of the 17th and at the beginning of the 18th Century. In 90 % of or settlements registrations commence on the first third of the 18th Century.

It is reasonable to make the most comprehensive research to be made, which hunts for the most ascendants in the direct line.

If the lack of interesting or the financial capabilities do not make it possible, any of the branches can be made to research, what can be improved later on.
